02: Tears For Fears - The Tipping Point

02: Tears For Fears - The Tipping Point

 2022 – Concord

For Day 02 of Album Month 2022, we shall talk about one of the big comeback stories of the year, Tears For Fears, and the very personal album that came from their reunion, The Tipping Point.

As I’ve said, I’m not a music journalist or anything, and I am not trying to be. I’m just a person wanting to share about my musical listenings and loves. With that said, there are many wonderful articles and interviews that you can search for that can give you the backstory on this album and how Roland and Kurt got to working together again, and I really hope you look into it. There is so much depth to this album, so I hope you take the chance to research and learn a bit. I suggest listening first, reading up on it, and then listening to the album again. You’ll be glad you did.

From start to finish, The Tipping Point is a stellar comeback, with all the elements that are very much Tears For Fears but with more life experience and greater maturity. The more I listen to it, the more I love it! It is truly a fantastic piece of work and I am so glad I got to experience a lot of it live this past June (and what a show that was!!). In my view, it’s a perfect pop album. If it doesn’t end up on ‘The Best of 2022’ lists, I shall be very put out.

I have to say, so many of these tracks were meant to be played live, and played live they were! I was fortunate to hear all but 3 songs on this album this way (my show was Tinley Park, IL on 16th June, for those curious), and they translated so perfectly I couldn’t help but get swept up in it all. The guys are as strong as ever both live and on album, the album moving through upbeat toe-tappers and sing-a-longs to warm loveliness with each song. I honestly can’t find a weak track on the entire thing.

Picking my favorites here is kind of hard, honestly, and there are a few stand out tracks, in my opinion, but I will give it a whirl. The title track, “The Tipping Point” lives rent free in my head a lot lately, and is becoming a bigger favorite over time, and “Rivers of Mercy” is simply gorgeous and enough to make me cry. Another favorite and a stand out track  is “My Demons”, which is the more rocking track of the album and leaves me struggling to not be obvious in my enjoyment when in public. lol  “End of Night” should be all over the radios if it’s not already as it’s perfect for radio and is loads better than much of the pop music on there these days. (People love hearing the classic Tears For Fears on the radio, so let them hear the new stuff, dammit! Am I right? “My Demons” would be great on radio, too!) There is much emotion and feel in this album, even with the more upbeat songs, and I find that to be more of an  uplifting to me than bringing heaviness. It brings to me a feeling of rebirth, to be honest, and with each listen, this album seems to hug me, and I appreciate that immensely.

There is more to Tears For Fears than the big radio hits of the 80s, and The Tipping Point encompasses all they are perfectly. It’s a very well done album, and one that I think will endure for a very long time. Well done, lads! And thanks for coming back. We missed you.
