Songs From The Spiral #4

And, finally, we have made it to the first Songs From The Spiral of 2012!

I admit that I got stuck in a bit of a stupor in this last week and a half, so I didn't work on this a capella anywhere near as much as I should have. There's something odd about the start of this year, I must say. I feel like I'm in a prolonged transitional limbo period of some kind. It's like I'm moving in slow motion or something. Hmmm... Anyway...

When I did work on it, I struggled with it and found myself stuck with what to do. I was attempting to do the song in the original key, but it's a bit at the top of my range and can be a little tough to sing comfortably. I did have a cover version of sorts of this song that I had been messing with vocally for about a year and a half, but I was resistant to use it. In the end, I decided that I should do the version that is most comfortable for me. This cover version you will hear is stepped down in key and I add my own vocal nuances. I'll probably catch flak for messing with the melody and for not keeping with the original key, and that's fine. My aim is not to sound just like the original artists. It is to share my talent and the personality contained within the vocals/music I share. I took some slight liberties with this song and I am happy with the current result. I will continue to work on it over time, though.

As for the song choice itself... This song has become very important to me over the years, and it was my theme song for 2011. I decided that I would keep with it as my theme for 2012 as it holds an energy that's been working well with me so far. I've also loved this song since I was young and it is my favorite by this group. Maybe I am not physically able to fly like a bird, but I definitely will do so figuratively. And I will remember this song when I do so.
